Dr Guo Xin studied a for a Bachelor’s in Journalism at Wuhan University, two Master’s degrees – in Higher Education at Tsinghua University and in Evidence-Based Social Intervention at Oxford University – and holds a PhD in Sociology of Education from University College London. She has held a variety of senior leadership positions in schools and educational organisations and has worked as a Senior Education Advisor for a branch of UNESCO. Dr Guo Xin joins us as Division Head for Lower and Middle School.
River Yu got her bachelor’s degree from Hawaii Pacific University major in Accounting. She passed the AICPA test and worked as internal and external auditor for several years. She has four years of experience in the fields of teaching English and Mathematics and specializes in designing the most effective and efficient teaching methods for students of all ages and nationalities.
Anita Xia received her B.A. from Huazhong Agricultural University and her Master Degree of Curriculum and Instruction from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She has five years’ experience of teaching Chinese language and literacy to both Chinese and American students. She joined Teach for China after graduation and served as the headteacher and taught Chinese literacy, focusing on teacher-student relationship and classroom management. While pursuing her master’s degree with a full scholarship at SIUE, she became a Chinese lecturer there and was responsible for designing the curriculum, teaching language courses, and conducting cultural events. After graduate school, she worked as an adjunct professor and Chinese program coordinator at a private liberal arts college in Massachusetts.
Courtney Gumson grew up in Albany, New York, USA. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University at Buffalo. Courtney worked in the social services field for the next six years. At the same time, she completed her master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Courtney decided to pursue further language studies in Spain, which facilitated her career change into education. In Madrid, Spain, Courtney taught English in both public and private bilingual primary schools, in addition to teaching adults and high school students preparing for university and English language proficiency exams.
Further career opportunities and her desire to experience new cultures brought Courtney to Shenzhen, China. She started as an English teacher and was later promoted to Head of English for grades 1-4. Courtney was recently licensed as an English as a Second Language teacher in the State of Massachusetts.
Ji Jun got his master degree on mathematics from JiangXi Normal University. After the graduation, He had been teaching in public school in Shunde and GCGS. From 2012 to 2020, Joey was the head teacher of the math and science department of CICEC and taught Pre-calculus AP calculus AP statistics etc. Years of teaching experience in domestic courses as well as in international courses makes Joey know the difference between them, and he can design differentiated teaching activities to different student groups to enhance their learning ability on mathematics.
Yin Shanshan (Susan) got Master Degree of Botany from Xiamen University and Bachelor Degree of Life Science from Chongqing Normal University. She worked for two well-known bilingual schools in Shenzhen. She has more than five years of teaching experience in the field of biology with some laboratory management experience. She also has exploration and accumulation of personalized learning and project-based learning. She likes to study learning psychology. She is good at getting close to students and establishing a positive and equal relationship between teachers and students. She believes that every child is a unique seed with unlimited potential. Under the appropriate education soil, every child can grow up and thrive.
Dingci Lai Graduated from BSc. (HONS) in MORSE from Warwick University, DC arrived at Singapore to study at the age of 14 to garner academic and life experience overseas. He also took an intercalated year at Monash University, Australia during his university time. Before joining Whittle School & Studios, he was a tutor for international Mathematics and translator at a bilingual school in Shenzhen to offer advice and suggestions to students who sought further studies in the international curriculum. With his understanding and perception of the multi-cultural world, DC would offer any competencies and skills that students at Whittle School require for their future.
Hanyang (Hilary) graduated from Capital Normal University and her major was Geography Education. Being a teacher, the best reward may be the latest news from her former students, who told her wonderful life changes now and then. Sometimes, leaving is for better returning, the 6-year experiences in poverty-alleviation NGO brought her more deep thoughts in humanity class. In recent 3 years, she has devoted into the balance between standard exams and holistic humanity education by the way of project-based learning.
Joanne got her Master Degree from Peking University and her B.A. from Shanghai International Studies University. After graduation, she worked in Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, where she was responsible for the Chinese language teaching program for international students. Then she went to the public schools in the United States to teach Chinese immersion courses, holding the Professional Educator’s License (K-6) of the United States. She is also a Certified Positive Discipline Classroom Educator.
Upon her return, she worked as a homeroom teacher at a well-known international school in Guangzhou, teaching multiple subjects, in both Chinese and English, and devoted herself to the design and develop the school-based courses. Gao has strong interests and rich experience in project-based learning and interdisciplinary teaching, and pays attention to the individual needs of students.
Winnifred holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of the West Indies, a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching English as an Additional Language and a Postgraduate Diploma in Bilingual Learners, both from the Institute of Education at the University of London, and is currently working towards a Master’s in Leadership from the same institution. She has taught and led at schools in Jamaica, the UK and China. We are excited to welcome Winnifred to Whittle as an ELL teacher in the Lower School.
Rachel Benham is a teacher with over five years of experience in Chinese international education. Rachel joins Whittle having been a member of Senior Faculty at Rutgers University’s Newark Institute at Northeast Normal University, where she led and mentored a team of English Language specialists in delivering courses designed to prepare students for the demands of international academia, endowing them with the skills to work critically and creatively with texts.
Rachel was also the founder and director of the English Writing Center at Northeast Normal University, offering advice and seminars to both students and faculty, playing a key role in the publication of several academic articles in international journals, and guiding many students through their applications to international universities.
Rachel has a BA in English from the University of London and an MA in Social and Cultural Theory from Staffordshire University. Drawing on both her educational and professional experience, Rachel has presented twice at Zhejiang University on subjects related to teaching Chinese students.
Rachel holds a Bachelor’s degree (with Honours) from the University of Cumbria, as well as qualifications in teaching English and teaching students with special educational needs. She taught in Thailand before moving to China, and taught English in Xi’An before moving to Shenzhen, where most recently she was the Academic Trainer and Acting Director of Studies at EF in Futian. Rachel brings her extensive experience of English teaching to Whittle as an ELL teacher in the Lower School.
Alyssa Zhang obtained her bachelor's degree in literature from Jilin University, and was later recommended to Sun Yat-sen University for a master's degree with her outstanding results. After graduation, she worked as a Chinese teacher in many schools in South Africa, Guangzhou and Hong Kong, designing experiential language courses with diverse themes and cultural integration. She participated a lot in how to customize education to meet the individual needs of each student and how to cultivate a culture of joyful learning as co-create with the students. She enjoys teaching and learning, which makes her really want to further the career on education. Alyssa believes that the original intention of education should be to explore with each child, to learn from the world, and to become a life-long learner.
Wu Xiaorong studied for a Bachelor’s in Chinese Language and Literature at Shandong Normal University and for a Master’s in Classic Chinese Literature at Nanjing University. A teaching fellow for Teach for China in Lincang, Yuannan, Xiaorong has also taught at the Chinese International School Hangzhou an the Nanjing Qinhuai Foreign Language School and will teach CLL here at Whittle.
Li Yalin graduated with a Bachelor’s in English Education from Qingdao University and a Master’s in Comparative Literature from Hong Kong Baptist University; she also holds a Diploma in Special Needs Education at Hong Kong University. Yalin has worked in Qingdao Danshan Public School and the Hong Kong International Montessori School, and joins us as a CLL teacher.
