A Letter from the Chancellor
Over the years I have spent in education leadership, I have come to see that running a school is much like being a parent. Both require balance.

A family cannot succeed without guidance, structure, and a shared understanding of what is right and wrong. But neither can it thrive without warmth, care, and a willingness to adapt. Too much rigidity stifles the spirit; too much leniency leads to chaos. The challenge lies in finding the right combination, where discipline and love complement each other. At Huitong, we work to create this balance every day. This school is a place where students feel both secure and inspired, where the sense of belonging is matched by a sense of purpose.

We cherish the enduring value of books and the liberal arts. But we also recognise that education cannot stand still. Innovation can be productive, so long as it builds on and enhances what works. Rather than removing foundational, traditional principles and content, we bring it to life with engaging pedagogy, hands-on creativity and memorable experiences.

As each Huitong student progresses through the grades, they build a portfolio that encapsulates and speaks of their unique ability, achievement, creative potential, and character.

Our schedule carves out considerable time and space for research-based passion projects, and university-style seminars that stretch and challenge even the most intellectual young people. For many students, it is this part of their Huitong experience that helps them construct a compelling college application. Such work cannot be faked. It is the mark of an education that goes beyond the superficial.

Our task is not to mould children to fit a pre-existing system but to create a diverse array of amazing scholarly and extracurricular opportunity and to guide each unique girl or boy along their own, special and unique pathway. This requires effort, communication, and above all, partnership. Parents know their children. Teachers understand the routes to success. Together, they work hand in hand to help every student find a distinctive path that fits their abilities and aspirations.

At its heart, education is an act of hope and of love. It is a belief in the future, in the potential of young people, and in the power of learning to make a difference in the world. At Huitong, this belief binds us together. It is what drives us forward. And it is what will carry our students toward the futures they deserve.

Articulate

Our graduates can read, listen, write, and speak well, in Chinese and English. But not only that: they can reason, employ critical thinking, debate, and describe complex and important concepts. Through monitored reading programmes, lively class discussion, and assessment of written work and public speaking, we check on their progress and guide them throughout their time at Huitong, all to the end of producing articulate young people who are engaging communicators.

Scholarly

Our graduates are scholars and love to learn. They read regularly and know how to research new material. They know their own culture and the sweep of global history. They are familiar with geopolitics and the trends in human thought over time. Their grasp of science, mathematics and technology is strong and will serve them well in later life. Huitong’s emphasis on the liberal arts, erudition, and in-depth interdisciplinary projects is extraordinary. We give the teachers and their pupils the time and space to develop true scholarship and be learners for life.

Well-Rounded

Our graduates have hinterland beyond their academic and scholarly life, and have resilience and a sense of perspective borne out of broad experience and character-developing endeavour. They have enjoyed purposeful, challenging, fun and confidence-building activities at Huitong. Through our Studios Programmes they have had many opportunities in sport, music, performance, clubs, societies and more, and will have shone in at least one loved, purposeful pursuit in which he or she has achieved excellence and a resulting lifelong self-assurance.

Creative

Our graduates are observant and can make connections between disciplines. They have experience in creating original work, whether artistic, two or three-dimensional, mathematical, scientific, technological, musical, theatrical, or written in poetry or prose. They have regularly exhibited their work, so are practiced in curating, presenting, and articulating what they have created. Over their years at Huitong, our students develop a unique portfolio of their achievements in the creative domain.

Impactful

Our graduates will make a positive impact on society, locally and globally. The world should be a better place because of their contribution and conduct - the decisions they make, the leadership they show, the kinds of people they are. The education we provide, the reading material, the activities, the thoughtful, caring environment - each element helps to shape good and well-rounded character. We see our pastoral advisory system as working hand in hand with Huitong parents as we collaborate in building an impactful global family.
